REVIS RUSSIAN APIARIES

Quality Russian Queens and Nucs

We have been a part of the USDA Russian program since 2001. Russian honey bees are all that we own. We believe it is impossible to raise a quality Russian when there are several honey bee stocks in the mating yards. Drone flooding with pure Russian drones is necessary to insure that the genetics of the Russian stock is not diluted.

As the program moves to phase three select queen producers will be working with the Honey Bee Lab in evaluating and selecting queen stock in one of the largest projects ever undertaken. Breeders will further select and evaluate genetics to produce an even better and more resistant honey bee. We are one of the queen producer operations that will be evaluating and producing queen stock with much assistance and advice from the Baton Rouge Honey Bee Lab. The Baton Rouge Honey Bee Lab is beginning a new five year cycle of research and evaluation with this huge project. Stay tuned exciting new work and RESULTS will be coming with the Russians!

When you consider putting Russian honey bee stock in your yard be sure you select a reputable Russian producer. There are many advertisers out there claiming to have Russians. Be sure and ask where they  purchased their breeder stock. For best results with Russians stay away from hybrid stock and queens that come out of africanized areas. Also keep Russian hives in Russian only yards. Do not start crossing Russians with other stocks to make a "better" bee. The Bee Lab has done a great job with the genetics and the selection of quality characteristics. I seriously doubt that a regular beekeeper is able to make Russian crosses and improve the characteristics. So the recommended way is to buy "real" Russians and keep the genetics as clean as possible!

Announcement: The Russian Honey Bee Breeders Association is actively working to improve the Russian stock every year in association with the Baton Rouge Bee Lab and Dr. Tom Rinderer. Breeder queens will NOT be released to the general public this year. Line maintenance has been turned over to the members of the RHBA. Russian production queens will be available from the members of the association. To insure the integrity of the Russian stock a program is being put in place to test the genetics of the bees used for line maintenance and queen production. Dr Lanie Bourgeois a research molecular biologist at the Bee Lab will be using genetic markers to certify the Russian stock sent to the lab by each member. Testing of stock this year is a requirement for ALL members.

This program has been implemented for several reasons. The main one is to keep the Russians Russian while improving the stock. We also want the beekeeping public to know what they are buying. As with any program there are suppliers that mislead either by being uninformed or on purpose. Suppliers try to associate themselves with the RHBA in a misleading way. If you have a question PLEASE call a member of the RHBA and get your questions answered and confirm membership. Any inquiry is welcome!

We will post much more information as the 2010 season progresses. The RHBA has a full year of activity ahead certifying, evaluating and educating.  The RHBA is excited that we can be a part of such a groundbreaking program. We certainly appreciate the publics support and patience as we build the Russian honey bee program.
